The famed Kotel Ha Ma'arivi, also known as the Western Wall or the Wailing Wall, is the only remaining structure of the Second Temple built by Herod circa 19 BCE, and destroyed by the Romans, along with most of Jerusalem, in 70 CE. Mount Moriah is also said to be the very spot from which G-d sparked the creation of the world and the location of the binding of Isaac. Simply put, for centuries, Mount Moriah has been the most sacred place for Jews the world over.
There is no doubt that the Temple Mount is a unique and holy place. But it is also a place of great controversy and contention. The main areas of conflict lie between the secular camp, which would like to see Jerusalem "internationalized" and the religious faction which demands the preservation of a united Jerusalem, as well as, the archaeological theories vs. the Biblical references, the tenets of religion vs. the findings of science, and most controversial of all, the Jewish claims vs. the Muslim propaganda.
Adding mystery to the conflict is the fact that hidden deep within the Temple Mount are many remnants and treasures of the two Temples. Chief among these treasures is the legendary Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant, as described in the Bible, is a wooden gold plated box that contains the two sets of stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed, and a Torah scroll (Babylonian Talmud - Baba Batra 14a.). The Ark was a portable temple and was carried by the tribe of Levi throughout the 40 years the Jews roamed in the desert until the First Temple was built. The construction of the Ark was commanded by G-d to Moses and served as a spiritual reminder that G-d would always accompany The People of Israel.
If the Ark of the Covenant were actually to be found, it would provide irrefutable, incontestable proof of the Jewish sovereignty over the Temple mount, the indisputable justice of a united Jewish Jerusalem and the undeniable right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel. However, complete control of the Temple Mount is currently in the hands of the Jordanian religious/military police (Waqf). Access to Jews is almost completely restricted which means that very little can be done to carry out a proper, full-scale archaeological dig.
